No. 18/20 Mizzou Softball Sweeps Doubleheader with Western Illinois

COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 18/20 Mizzou Softball swept both ends of a doubleheader against Western Illinois by scores of 10-0 in the opener, and 6-0 in the finale. Hatti Moore, Brooke Wilmes and a pair of shutouts from Laurin Krings and Megan Schumacher headlined the evening.

GAME ONE

The Tigers got started early in the opener, thanks to a Hatti Moore two-run blast to left, scoring Brooke Wilmes in the first inning.

In the second inning, Abby George collected her third RBI in as many games with an infield single, scoring Megan Moll from third. Brooke Wilmes was the next batter and she drove a double into the right-center gap to score both George, and Imani Myint, who had entered as a pinch runner.

TURNING POINT

Leading 5-0 entering the fifth inning, Mizzou looked to add three runs to put the game away. The Tigers added one run quickly on a Riley Frizell single through the right side, scoring Alex Honnold. A pair of singles from Megan Moll and Imani Myint loaded the bases. Following a fielder’s choice, Brooke Wilmes came to the plate looking to end the game. Wilmes delivered, driving a 3-0 pitch over the right-center wall to walk it off with a grand slam.

TOP TIGERS

Brooke Wilmes led the way for the Tigers in the opener, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a stolen base, a grand slam, six runs batted in, and two runs scored.

Hatti Moore blasted her ninth home run of the season in the first inning of the opener.

Megan Moll recorded her first career multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 performance. She also scored two runs in the contest.

Laurin Krings went five shutout innings while striking out 10 batters, a new career-high for the freshman.

NOTES

Wilmes set a new career-high with 6 RBIs in the contest. She also recorded her third-career three extra-base hit game. For the third time this season, Brooke Wilmes reached base safely in every plate appearance. Wilmes’ two doubles added to her career total, putting it at 45

Hatti Moore entered the top-ten of the Mizzou home runs list.

GAME TWO

Hatti Moore’s home run got the Tigers started in the first game of the day, and she did it again in the second. After a scoreless top-half of the first, Brooke Wilmes reached on a single to right field before Hatti Moore knocked one over the right-center wall to put Mizzou up 2-0 once again.

After being held off the board in the second, Mizzou loaded the bases in the third. Jenna Laird and Cayla Kessinger singled, followed by a Hatti Moore walk. Emma Raabe ripped a line drive into the right-center field gap, clearing the bases and putting the score at 5-0.

TURNING POINT

Hatti Moore stepped up to the plate in the fifth inning already having two home runs to her name on the day. Nonetheless, the Texan drove a 3-0 pitch over the right field wall for a solo shot and her third home run of the day. Mizzou led 6-0 after the fifth.

Megan Schumacher provided a complete-game shutout, striking out six batters. She worked out of bases-loaded jams in the fifth and sixth innings.

TOP TIGERS

Hatti Moore was the story of the day. The senior went 2-for-2 in the second game with a pair of home runs. She drove in three runs and scored three, also drawing a walk.

Emma Raabe had a big two-out three-run double to give the Tigers some much needed breathing room.

Megan Schumacher pitched a seven-inning shutout. Schumacher had not pitched a full seven inning game prior to her performance against Western Illinois.

NOTES

Hatti Moore hit her 27th, 28th and 29th career home runs in one day. Moving from T-11 to 9th on the Mizzou home runs list.

Mizzou earned their ninth shutout victory of the 2021 season.

Brooke Wilmes extended her hitting streak to nine games. Her stolen base in the second game put her at 10 stolen bases on the season for the first time in her career.

Mizzou will face off with Auburn in a three-game series in Columbia, beginning Friday at 2:30 pm CT.
