Grizzlies turn heads in momentum during First JUCO Challenge game versus Wabash Valley

The Missouri State West Plains Grizzly Basketball Team faced the Wabash Valley Warriors this Friday afternoon; November 8th, 2024 from Fitzimmons-John Arena on the Campus of Moberly Area Community College in Moberly, Missouri. After a well played first quarter, They were upset by The Warriors by a score of 78-72.

1st Half: Tip stolen by #15, Zaheem Jackson and a three pointer attempt by #2, Riley Whitacker which bounces up and off the rim no good. Some attempted steals and three point attempts early on by the 6”4 guard for the Warriors, #23, Jamil Barber. A good two point in by #5, Clay Butler. #12, Ergie Kougnami gets a stop on the Warriors and tries to match his high scoring act seen during the last game vs. Link Year Prep. He gets two free-throw attempts, the first attempt he only makes one. The second he makes both. Some fouls early on in the game on The Warriors, mainly on #15, Khore Furlow. Ergie tries for a three but doesn’t make it. Early score is 7-5, Grizzlies have the lead. #5, Shaun Glass plays defense for the Grizzlies, keeps it out of the eager hands on the Warriors. Up and in for #23, Barber. No perimeter shots yet in the game. #12, Kougnami is still on fire as he does a great job controlling the offense. #14, Jayden Roach is in the game now for the grizzlies who plays some great defense. Warriors now have at least three turnovers. And a fourth turnover as Shaun Glass gets his hand out and gets it back for the Grizzlies. #2, Jonathan White is now in the game, he is keeping up the momentum along with Jayden Roach. Score is now tied up 9-9 with a little over nine minutes to go. Up and in for Glass now, Grizzlies take back a two point lead. Roach who gets his hand on it will shoot two. He makes one. #33, Kumwimba making some good rebounds today as he plays rhythm on top of Roach. #15, Jackson gets another one up and in as the lead is now 17-5, he comes closest to these high arching shots that both teams need, but still no dice in actually attempting. Neither team has made a good three yet either. Jackson and Glass come out and #11, Javian Downey comes back in & #1, Ryan Richardson. Richardson gets some hands on the passes, unfortunately he gets travels giving the Grizzlies a foul. Wabash makes their fifth turnover as another foul is called on #15, Furlow. A good trip to the throw line by #2, Robinson for the Warriors brings up a three point lead. #10, Jake Sage shoots a good one-in-one and puts Grizzlies back on top by one. The first three of the day made by #12, Kougnami. Warriors try for a three to match it up but fail multiple attempt and #33, Kiumwimba gets the rebound. Another good two by #10, Jake Sage. #15, Jackson makes another set of scores. Coming towards the last few minutes of the Game, Grizzlies lead 22-18. A good dunk for the warriors, by #21, Kevin Anthony. Riley Whitacker makes a great play, falling back on the shot and coming within inches of the defender. Whitacker goes to the throw line for three and makes one. Grizzlies have five fouls, Warriors have six. Score is 26-22 with under two minutes to play. A good trip to the throw line for #21, Anthony who shoots two and makes both. Grizzlies up by one. #10 Jake Sage makes a left handed layup. Ball is knocked away, another turnover for the Grizzlies. Sage will go to the free-throw line. Shaun Glass makes a great three pointer and brings the score back up to six point lead. Twenty seconds as Sage makes the last jumper for the Grizzlies, Score now 32-25. Sage shoots two and makes both. We go to the half

2nd Half: Kougnami puts the ball in and already some good rebounds #2, Riley Whitacker. Warriors turnover the ball for the tenth time. #15, Zaheem Jackson tries a three, rebounded by Javian Downey. #5, Clay Butler makes one out of two at the free-throw. #33, Lionel Kiumwimba makes his first bucket of the game. Score is now 46-26, Grizzlies lead it. #23, Barber picks up a goal after coming down. #23 Barber shoots two at the line and makes both, Grizzlies are beginning to feel some pressure especially around the perimeter. #15, Zaheem Jackson also makes two at the throw line. Grizzlies play defense and good drive, Butler makes a three after a long rebound. Score is now 37-32, under eighteen minutes to go.#20, Harris comes in the game for the Grizzlies #5, Glass also comes back in. #12, Ergie makes one out of two at the line. #15, Zaheem Jackson on rebound gets it the ball up and in and gets the lead back to eight points. Zaheem goes to the throw line and makes both free throws. He’s made three straight. Good block #20, Blayne Harris swats the ball out of bounds from the Warriors. #23, Barber will go to the line for the Warriors and makes one. #14, Roach comes back in for the Grizzlies. Off the rebound of #2, Jonathan White, Roach goes in for a good layup. #0, Gabe Byrd makes a nice full court shot for the Warriors, his ninth point of the game. A nice over the shot play by #5, Butler for the Warriors who are keeping up the pressure in this 2nd half. 14:35 left in the ballgame now. 45-39 is now the score. A good layup, by #11, Muja Burton who gets it from a #10, Chandler rebound for the Warriors. #11, Javian Downey comes back in for the Grizzlies. Putback and remound by rebound of Downey’s hands but no good. Shot clock runs out. Grizzly lead is now 46-41.#11, Muja Burton shoots two for the Warriors. He makes both with 13:10 to go in the ballgame. Grizzlies lead by three now, 46-43. #2, Riley Whitacker makes a good, high up jumper. #10, Chandler makes a good three. Grizzlies trying to keep the strength on rebounds as they are not making their threes. They miss two shots right under the basket. #10, Jake Sage gets a rebound for the Grizzlies which goes loose. It will be Warrior Basketball. #14, Jayden Roach comes back into the game for #33, Kiumwimba. Foul on play as Jayden Roach tries to block but is good for #15, Furlow. And now Warriors are on top 49-48. #2, Whitacker makes three and it is good. A defensive and holding foul comes on the Grizzlies after a weak pass by #10, Jake Sage. #23, Barber at the throw line makes two good putting them back on top, 52-50. Sage turns his back and ball gets slapped away giving the Grizzlies a sixth turnover. #10, Chandler at the throw line for the Warriors and makes one. After rebound, it will be Grizzly Basketball after getting hooked. 10:19 to go in the Ball-Game. Jamil Barber scores his ninth point of the game for the Warriors. Grizzlies are now down by five. #15, Jackson puts it up and in for the Grizzlies, but fouls. Score is now 56-51. Zaheem will now shoot two. He makes both. This will now put us within at least three. Zaheem now has at least eleven points on the day. Muja Burton tries to put it up and in, no Good. He’ll shoot two. First of two good. Burton has made three out of four in this game. He makes his second bucket. Shaun glass with a nice jumper off the pass by #33, Kiumwimba. #12, Ergie gets it up and in puts us back within one. Wabash has the ball as score is now 58-57. Up and good by #5, Clay Butler. Ergie Koungami tries a jumper but gets fouled, he will shoot two. First try is no- good. Second one is good. Ball is partially blocked by Kumwimba, but Ergie gets a dunk up and in. We are tied at 60 points. #15 Jackson will dribble off the right side, Huge three pointer by #20, Blayne Harris. 63-60 is now the score. #0, Gage Byrd gets a jumper back in for the Warriors. Jump ball as Ergie gets tied up underneath, Warriors get the basketball. Score is 63-62, Grizzlies. Loose ball as Zaheem trips after kicking it out. Grizzlies will shoot one in one. Both sides will now take double bonus. First throw is good for #15 Zaheem. Grizzlies now have a chance to get the lead back. He gets the next one. A lay-in is up and good by #21, Kevin Anthony by the Warriors. Kougnami tries a dunk, Kumwimba tries to help put it in on the dunk but is fouled. He shoots two. First is no good. The second is good. 66-64, Grizzlies have a two point lead. Layup in the run is good by #2, Robinson for the Warriors. #2 White for the Grizzlies tries a hand shot, no good. Ergie tries a jump shot, no good. 68-66, now the score. Scoop shot by Zaheem is good. Warriors now have the lead. Air ball saved by Kiumwimba. Three-ball out of the far side is no good. #5, Shaun Glass will come back in. Zaheem Jackson shoots two and foul on shooting by #2, Robinson for the Warriors. First throw for Zaheem is good. Second also good. 2:40 to go as the Grizzlies trail by two. Jackson on the right wing goes inside to Kiumwimba and Kougnami, Kiumwimba goes in and ball hits the rim. Ball is shot just before the shot clock honks. In the lane, Butler goes up and in, makes a good layup. 1:04 to good. #20, Blayne Harris has it, foul called in back court. 35 seconds to go now. #10, Kamea Chandler shoots two for Wabash, both throws are good. Warriors have a six point lead. Second turnover in the second half by the Grizzlies. Two free-throws good by #0, Byrd at the free-throw line. Wabash Valley on track to win this game with seconds to spare. And they do.

*According to Head Coach Jared Phay, the main cause of the game loss was defense. Great momentum in first half, Not as much in the second.
